Dojo Etiquette

1 The chief instructor is Shihan Michael Graves.

2 All black belts should be treated with the utmost respect.

3 Respect all dojo members.

4 Never abuse your knowledge of Karate-do.

5 Do not abuse any training equipment.

6 Do not touch weapons without instructors’ permission.

7 No smoking, swearing, chewing gum or food is allowed in the dojo.

8 Frequently review the bulletin board for dojo news and information.

9 Remove your shoes and jacket before entering the mat area.

10 When entering or leaving the mat always bow to show respect.

11 The uniform will be a traditional white karate gi only.

12 Protective groin cups are mandatory for male students. Protective hand pads, headgear and mouth guards are required for some classes.

13 No jewelry may be worn during practice. Keep your finger and toe nails trimmed short.

14 Before class begins make good use of warming up.

15 When resting in class, sit on one knee, cross-legged or seza.

16 Be on time for your class.

17 At the sound of the gong everyone should line up immediately.

18 If you have to enter the mat while class is in session, stand at the edge of the mat until the instructor acknowledges you.

19 Acknowledge any instructions you receive by saying "Hai" or "Os".

20 Pay strict attention when the instructors are teaching.

21 There should be no unnecessary talking during a class.

22 If the instructor bows off the mat, the highest-ranking student will take over.

23 Any person assigned to teach the class shall be treated with the same respect as Sensei.

24 If you have any injuries before the class starts inform the instructor.

25 As you advance in rank it is your responsibility to help those below you.

26 All lower ranks shall obey all higher ranks.

27 Return anything that you use the place where you found it.

28 Dispose of any mess you might see whether you created it or not.

29 Do not leave any clothing or towels in the Dojo overnight.

30 Stay out of the office unless you have business with Shihan Graves or the instructor.

31 If you are absent for more than two scheduled practices in a row, please call the Dojo to keep us informed of your status.

32 Students may not train or compete outside the Dojo without Sensei Graves’ approval.

33 Help support your school by telling your friends about it.

34 To learn a new kata you must be taught by Shihan Graves or an authorized instructor.

35 Refrain from talking about religion or politics.

36 Solicitation of any sort, unless authorized by Sensei Graves, is not allowed.

37 Everyone must learn the ‘Code of Bushido’.
